E. A. "Short" Heinrichs, a graduate of the University of Nebraska and Kansas State University, was born and raised in the midwestern corn belt community of Henderson, Nebraska, USA. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska and Kansas State University and has held faculty positions at the University of Tennessee and as Professor and Head of the Department of Entomology, Louisiana State University. A major portion of his professional career has been in international agricultural research in the tropics where he has worked in India, South America, Asia and Africa. His research emphasis has been on plant resistance to rice insects. Most of his rice research was conducted during his tenure as Head of the Entomology Department at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines and as IPM Project Leader at the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA) in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa. An author of more than 150 journal articles and several books, Dr. Heinrichs is currently Research Professor of Entomology at the University of Nebraska.
