Research Interests

I conduct IPM research that is complementary and supportive of the educational and productivity needs of vegetable growers and processors in the upper midwest. Both basic and applied research is done to develop and implement integrated pest management (IPM) programs for vegetable crops, including: sweet corn, cabbage, cucumber, and carrot. Specific areas of interest include the integration of plant resistance with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for O. nubilalis management in sweet corn; timing of Bt and conventional insecticide applications; development and validation of easy-to-use sequential sampling plans for insect pests; development of hybrid-and growth stage -specific action thresholds for O. nubilalis in sweet corn; development of improved pheromone traps for monitoring O. nubilalis moths; use of reduced rates of Bt and native parasitic wasps for management of Lepidopteran pests of cabbage; comparison of aster leafhopper dynamics in organic vs. conventional carrot production systems; comparison of actual vs. simulated defoliation by striped cucumber beetle in pickling cucumber; development of a management model for O. nubilalis in sweet corn; and the development, stability, inheritance and fitness of resistance in O. nubilalis to Bt endotoxins, and related resistance management issues for the deployment of Bt-corn.

Teaching Interests

With my extension appointment, my primary teaching activity is focused toward growers, consultants, agronomists, and vegetable processing company representatives via educational meetings and workshops, field days, newsletters, educational materials, and this home page. I also participate in our graduate curricula by assisting Dr. Ted Radcliffe with teaching Insect Pest Management (ENT. 5-210), which is also supported by a new web page, Radcliffe's IPM World Textbook. We plan to use this site as an interactive resource for teaching IPM at St. Paul and for "distance-learning" opportunities for students, consultants, agronomists, etc., who may be interested in short courses for continuing education credits (CEUs).
