Dr. Pedigo's research seeks to improve pest management in Iowa field crops through a comprehensive understanding of crop-plant response to stress caused by insects and other pests. His primary focus is soybean and alfalfa ecosystems. His major emphasis is developing sound economic thresholds and pest-sampling programs for grower-based management decisions. A companion effort is the development of management tactics that reduce pesticide use and provide economic advantages.
Recommendations from IPM research on this project have emphasized
pest economic thresholds and pest population monitoring, thus
reducing pesticide inputs, improving grower profits, and conserving
environmental quality. Additional research on pest complexes,
currently, soybean cyst nematode, weeds, and insect defoliators, will
improve the decision-making capabilities of Iowa farmers. The
development of alternative management tactics from this research will
allow growers to establish sustainable farming practices that are
economically acceptable and environmentally compatible. Tactics under
investigation include modification of soybean planting dates and
cropping patterns to avoid losses to pests and reduce the risk of
environmental damage.
