Hollis M. Flint graduated with a B. S. in biology from Stetson
University, Deland, Florida, in June 1960. He attended graduate
school at the University of Florida, graduating in June 1964 with a
Ph.D. in medical entomology. He worked at the USDA Metabolism and
Radiation Research Laboratory, Fargo, North Dakota, 1964-1971, where
he conducted radiation and chemical sterilization studies on a
variety of pest insects including the boll weevil. In 1971 he moved
to the USDA Western Cotton Research Laboratory, Phoenix, AZ. During
his years at Phoenix he worked on insect pheromones (1971-1982), host
plant resistance (1982-1992) and whitefly control (1992 to present).
He has published in all these research areas, but is best known for
his work to control the pink bollworm using its pheromone. During his
career as a research entomologist for the USDA, he has devoted
himself to finding and developing non-insecticidal methods of insect
control.
