Summer 1999: Aphid trapping data.

Results reported in this issue of Aphid Alert are total captures of winged aphids and species identifications for the following locations and sampling interval end-dates.  At some locations the potato crop has been harvested. If additional data is received for locations not reported on this page (no data) that data be incorporated into this week's issue of the newsletter once the samples have been received and sorted.

SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS FOR WEEK ENDING 13 SEPTEMBER.

Winged green peach aphids were captured at only one location, Hoople, ND, during the week ending 13 September. Other aphid species that are potential vectors of PVY averaged 4.11 per trap across all locations. Thus, aphid numbers continued to decline for the fourth week in a row. Trap capture data is reported here for only 9 of the 14 stations in the network. Any missing data will be added to this WWW report as it becomes available and associated files will be updated accordingly. PCR tests to determine if the captured green peach aphids were carrying virus will be reported here when the tests are completed. Next week will be the final week of aphid sampling for the 1999 season.

A article describing the Aphid Alert project has been submitted for publication in the September issue of the World Potato Congress Newsletter. Advance copy of the submitted article has been posted on our server for your information, Aphid Alert: A research/outreach initiative addressing potato virus problems in the northern Midwest.

The text of the WPC newsletter article is similar to a proposal we shall submit next week to the University of Minnesota, College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, Rapid Agricultural Response Fund, requesting continued funding of this project for three more years.

A number of you have written letters in support of continuyed funding of this project. We thank you for your support, it is really appreciated.  If any of our readers have suggestions for improvement of this project, please send us e-mail.

new-bang.gif (303 bytes)We maintain a list of e-mail addresses to facilitate communication with those of you interested in receiving updates about this research or any resulting advisories sooner than this information can be delivered by mail or even before it is posted on the WWW.  If you wish your name added to receive such messages please send us an e-mail at radcl001@umn.edu.   In the message, write "Aphid Alert subscribe."
